The Vientiane Capital People's Councils reported at its 2nd Ordinary Session the results of the monitoring of factories in the capital city, taking account of their environmentally and socially negative impacts.

A report suggests that only 61 chemical factories are legally registered in Vientiane Capital, while several factories were established illegally and cause harmful impacts on both the environment and host communities in terms of wastewater and air pollution, thus plaguing local people’s health.

The closures include a metal recycling factory at the Vientiane Industry and Trade Area (VITA Park), a potassium factory and the SinoHydro Mining Factory in Xaythany district, a brick factory and a beer waste factory in Saysettha district, and a metal melting factory in Sikhottabong district.

The report also noted the import of a various kinds of food items, beverages, medicine, fake and expired cosmetics and other products from neighbouring countries.
