(KPL) Interplast Australia & New Zealand (Interplast) will visit the Mahosot General Hospital from 6 to 16 February 2017 to facilitate plastic and reconstructive surgical services and conduct trainings in the areas of burn management and treatment.

The Interplast Team will include: Dr Philip Slattery - Surgeon, Dr James Savundra - Surgeon, Dr Andrew Miller - Anaesthetist, Dr Christopher Lowry - Anaesthetist, Ms Gillian Bathgate - Nurse, Ms Shannon Muir - Nurse, Ms Samantha Jervios - Nurse, Ms Sharon Goldby - Hand Therapist, and Ms Sarah Tolerton - Observer.

The Interplast medical team will conduct a free consultation clinic for patients who have congenital or acquired deformities including burn injuries at the Mahosot General Hospital on Monday 6 February 2017, according to a press release from the Australian Embassy in Vientiane Capital on January 25.

Surgeries will be performed free of charge from Tuesday, 7 February until Thursday, 16 February, 2017. The team will also be joined by Sarah Tolerton, a scholarship recipient of the international Registrar Program, established in partnership with the Australasian Foundation for Plastic Surgery.

Interplast’s long-term objectives are to improve the quality of lives of people living with disabilities as a result of congenital or acquired medical conditions who would otherwise not receive treatment. While our volunteers work, they also train and mentor local professionals, laying the foundations for a stronger health system.

Interplast commenced programs in Laos in 1995 in cooperation with the Lao Ministry of Health, initially focusing on cleft lip and palate training. Since 1996, Interplast has undertaken more than 25 visits to Laos to train local staff in the techniques of cleft lip and palate repair, and conducted over 1,300 surgeries. The training conducted has resulted in the establishment of a local Laos Cleft Team from Mahosot Hospital, Vientiane. The Laos Cleft Team, with support from Interplast, conducts annual cleft lip and palate outreach activities in rural Laos. The annual Interplast visit to Vientiane now focuses on congenital and acquired deformities as well as the training monitor of local medical staff.

This program is proudly funded by Gary Stafford’s Spellbrook Foundation Fund, Phu Bia Mining, and the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP)
