(KPL) The General Debate is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All,” with world leaders and senior representatives discussing major international challenges and priorities.

The Lao delegation is participating in the General Debate, as well as related high-level events and bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the session.

In his opening remarks, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted major challenges facing the international community, including peace and security, inequality, the climate crisis and the rapid development of artificial intelligence. He called for respect for the UN Charter and international law, protection of civilians, humanitarian access, action on climate change and stronger international cooperation to address emerging risks from AI.

President of the 81st Session of the General Assembly Dr. Khalilur Rahman outlined his priorities for the session, which include restoring trust in the United Nations, strengthening peace and security, advancing UN reform, accelerating development, protecting human rights, addressing technological change and promoting more inclusive multilateral cooperation.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly, Deputy Prime Minister Thongsavanh held bilateral meetings with foreign counterparts, including the foreign ministers of Romania, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan. The meetings focused on bilateral relations and opportunities to strengthen cooperation.

At the regional level, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Anoupharb Vongnorkeo, representing Laos, attended the inaugural ASEAN-Pacific Alliance Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, where participants discussed cooperation in areas including sustainable development, connectivity, the digital economy and culture.

Deputy Prime Minister Thongsavanh is scheduled to deliver Laos’ national statement during the UNGA 81 General Debate on September 26.

The high-level General Debate will continue through September 28, 2026.
