The agreement was signed by Thongphan Savanphet, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Lao PDR to the United Nations, and Egriselda Aracely González López, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the United Nations, in the presence of diplomats from both countries.
During the ceremony, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across a range of areas, including mutual support in international and multilateral forums.
The establishment of diplomatic relations reflects the Lao PDR's consistent foreign policy of peace, independence, friendship, and cooperation, while expanding its diplomatic network to 154 countries worldwide.
El Salvador, located in Central America, gained independence on September 15, 1821, and has San Salvador as its capital. The country has a population of approximately 6.38 million, covers 21,041 square kilometers, and operates under a presidential system of government. Spanish is the official language.
The country's economy is driven by tourism, remittances, renewable energy—including hydropower, wind, solar, and geothermal power—and other sectors. The U.S. dollar is the official currency, while Bitcoin is also recognized for use, primarily within the private sector. El Salvador's per capita income was estimated at US$5,893 in 2025.
A founding member of the United Nations, El Salvador joined the organization on October 24, 1945, and has remained active in multilateral affairs. It has contributed to UN peacekeeping operations, co-chaired the Ad Hoc Working Group on UN General Assembly Reform during the 75th to 77th sessions, and currently serves as co-chair of the Global Dialogue on AI Governance (2025–2026). The country is also an active member of the Group of 77 and China, the Forum of Small States (FOSS), and an observer of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
