Asian Development Bank (ADB) Frontier initiative has announced a $400,000 growth capital investment in Houng Sok Sole Co Ltd., a fast-growing, local-owned bakery and food manufacturing company in the Lao People Democratic Republic (Lao PDR).
The investment will expand domestic food production, create jobs, build skills, and reduce reliance on imports. Beyond commercial growth, it will advance broader development objectives by supporting Houng Sok to establish an ISO certified food manufacturing facility—setting new industry standards in the Lao PDR, demonstrating the viability of local production, strengthening supply chains, and fostering more resilient and inclusive private sector growth.“ADB supports private sector development that creates jobs and incomes for people, strengthens local industries, and helps communities benefit from more resilient local value chains,” said Shanny Campbell, ADB Country Director for the Lao PDR. “The investment in Houng Sok underscores the vital role of locally owned, women led enterprises in strengthening supply chains, expanding consumer choices, and creating meaningful job opportunities in the Lao PDR.”The cake and bakery market in the Lao PDR—estimated at approximately $36 million— remains highly fragmented and heavily reliant on imports. With established nationwide distribution, strong brand recognition, and growing consumer demand for locally made products, Houng Sok is well positioned to capture this opportunity and strengthen domestic value chains."The partnership with ADB Frontier comes at a pivotal moment for Houng Sok," said Kulap Sengphachanh, CEO of Houng Sok. "Our vision is to produce high-quality, local products that Lao consumers can trust and be proud of. This funding will enable us to take a massive leap forward to building a standardized, high-capacity production facility and opening our own retail doors to the community. It validates the hard work of our team and sets the stage for our next chapter of growth.”ADB Frontier’s investment financing of Houng Sok’s new ISO-certified production facility will quadruple its in-house manufacturing capacity, increase self-production of its best-selling Khao Nom Lao range from the current 20% to 80%, and fully internalize its fresh bakery line. This will strengthen quality control, meet growing consumer demand, and reduce reliance on overseas manufacturers. The investment will also support the company in opening its two branded retail stores in Vientiane, creating a direct sales channel that enhances brand visibility and deepens engagement with customers.
