Tenth Party Congress wraps up with great success

KPL (KPL) The 10th Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, which took place at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane Capital from 18-22 January 2016, wrapped up with noticeable results with the new Party leadership expressing its commitment to work towards graduating Laos from the Least Developed Country Status by 2020.

(KPL) The 10th Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, which took place at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane Capital from 18-22 January 2016, wrapped up with noticeable results with the new Party leadership expressing its commitment to work towards graduating Laos from the Least Developed Country Status by 2020.

The five-day congress was attended by 685 permanent Party members who represented over 252,800 Party members from across the country.

The congress approved a political report which evaluated the performance of the leadership of the 9th Central Committee of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party over the past five years in translating into reality the 9th Party Congress’s resolution (2011-2015).

The congress approved goals set under the eighth five-year National Socio-Economic Development Plan (2016-2020) aiming at graduating Laos from Least Developed Country Status by 2020, the Socio-Economic Development Strategy for the next 10 years (2016-2025), and the Vision 2030 which has been designed to ensure that Laos is among upper middle income countries by 2030.

The participants also approved an evaluation of the performance of the 9th Party Central Committee, approved the amended statute of the Party, and elected the 10th Central Committee the Lao People's Revolutionary Party comprising 69 permanent members and 8 substitute members.  

The new Party Central Committee elected Mr Bounnhang Vorachit as Secretary General of the Party Central Committee replacing Mr Choummaly Sayasone who had assumed office as the Party Chief for two 5-year terms.  

The 10th Party Central Committee at its first plenary session on 21 Jan elected 11 Politburo members namely: Mr Bounnhang Vorachit, Mr Thongloun Sisoulith, Ms Pany Yathortou, Dr Bounthong Chitmany, Mr Phankham Viphavanh, Mr Chansy Phosikham, Dr Xaysomphone Phomvihane, Lt. Gen Chansamone Chanyalath, Dr Khamphanh Phommathat, Dr Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune, and Dr Sonexay Siphandone.
