(KPL) Authorities in Champasak Province are warning businesses against price gouging and hoarding ahead of the Lao New Year, saying violators will face legal action.

The directive, issued in early April 2026 by the provincial Department of Industry and Commerce, is aimed at maintaining market stability and protecting consumers during the holiday period.

Officials said businesses must sell goods at normal market prices and are prohibited from arbitrarily increasing prices, particularly for essential items. Traders are also banned from hoarding goods to manipulate supply and drive up prices.

Authorities stressed that all products must meet safety standards, with expired or substandard goods prohibited from sale.

Businesses are required to display clear pricing in Lao kip and ensure product labels are written in the Lao language. Vendors selling New Year gift baskets must include their shop’s address and contact information on packaging to support inspections.

Market monitoring has been intensified, with officials in Pakse and other districts working with supermarkets, convenience stores and market operators to ensure compliance.

Authorities said any violations will be prosecuted under the law.
