(KPL) New traffic directions on nine downtown routes in Vientiane Capital took effect from Feb. 28, 2026, to support Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) operations and ease congestion.
According to Sangkhom Phommalat, Head of the Vientiane Capital Traffic Police Department, authorities have deployed 145 traffic police officers across 63 key points and intersections to guide motorists and ensure smooth implementation of the new system.
Traffic police will continue public information and on-site guidance activities until residents and road users are fully familiar with the new directions. Authorities indicated that penalties for violations will not be enforced initially, with fines expected to begin after a two- to three-month adjustment period.
Officials urged the public to carefully follow traffic signs, road markings, and official guidance to support effective implementation. The traffic direction adjustments are intended to accommodate urban growth, reduce congestion, and improve road safety in line with the city’s evolving transport needs.
