(KPL) The Embassy of Japan in the Lao PDR hosted a National Day reception on Feb 26, 2026, at the Ambassador’s residence in Vientiane to celebrate the 66th birthday of Emperor Naruhito, observed on Feb 23.
In his remarks, Ambassador Koizumi Tsutomu reflected on a milestone year for bilateral relations, noting that Laos marked the 50th anniversary of nationhood while Japan and Laos celebrated the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties. He highlighted the elevation of relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and welcomed high-level exchanges, including visits by President Thongloun Sisoulith, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, and the Laos–Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group, as well as the visit to Laos by Princess Aiko last year.

Looking ahead, Ambassador Koizumi reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to deepening long-term cooperation with Lao PDR. He noted progress on the reconstruction of Chao Anouvong Stadium, supported by Japan and scheduled for completion later this year, and expressed hope that sports exchanges would expand in connection with upcoming international sporting events in Japan.
During the reception, Thoummaly Vongphachanh, President of the Laos–Japan Parliamentary Friendship Group and Chair of the National Assembly Justice Committee, proposed a toast to continued friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
The event was attended by senior Lao officials, including Finance Minister Santiphap Phomvihane and Minister of Public Works and Transport Leklai Sivilay, along with diplomats, development partners, and representatives of Japanese companies and non-governmental organizations. Guests sampled Japanese cuisine and viewed exhibitions highlighting Japan’s cooperation activities in Laos.
