(KPL) Her Imperial Highness Princess Aiko of Japan wore a traditional Lao dress during her meeting with President Thongloun Sisoulith in Vientiane, as part of her official visit to the Lao PDR from 17–22 November 2025.

The Princess’s first official overseas visit follows an invitation from Vice President Pany Yathotou, issued in connection with celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Laos and Japan. During her stay, Princess Aiko is also visiting several cultural and historical sites in Vientiane.

President Thongloun extended a warm welcome to the royal guest and praised the significance of the visit, noting that it is the first by a member of the Japanese Imperial Family to Laos in 13 years and Princess Aiko’s first official trip abroad. He said the visit represents an important milestone in bilateral relations and further strengthens the long-standing friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

He highlighted symbols of this friendship, including the four Lao elephants residing at Kyoto Zoo and the cherry blossoms in the Lao–Japan Friendship Park in Viengxay District, Houaphanh Province both of which have become popular attractions for visitors from Laos, Japan, and abroad.

President Thongloun conveyed his warm regards to Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, expressing hope that the multi-ethnic people of Laos will one day have the opportunity to welcome the Emperor, Empress, Crown Prince, Crown Princess, and other members of the Imperial Family to the Lao PDR.

He also expressed, on behalf of the Government and people of Laos, sincere gratitude to Japan for its long-standing support and valuable assistance, which has played a key role in advancing the Lao PDR’s national socio-economic development across successive stages.
