(KPL/Prensa Latina)  Chinese tech giant Huawei is advancing open-pit mining automation with a comprehensive solution that integrates artificial intelligence (AI), advanced networks, and automated control systems.

In an interview with Prensa Latina, Jack Chen, Vice President of Marketing for Huawei’s Oil, Gas, and Mining Business Unit, detailed the system’s components, which include microwave radar, high-definition (HD) cameras, and intelligent computing platforms installed on mining trucks. For seamless communication, the solution leverages 5G-Advanced technology, optimized for industrial environments with higher efficiency and reliability.

Chen explained that the system connects to centralized control centers and cloud platforms, integrating dispatch systems and real-time HD mapping. This enables fully autonomous operations—from loading and transport to unloading—with trucks dynamically adjusting speed based on terrain conditions.

Huawei reports significant productivity gains, with over 100 autonomous trucks already in commercial operation, achieving 120% efficiency compared to human-operated vehicles. The company also noted that more than 2,000 autonomous trucks are currently deployed in China alone.

Chen highlighted growing interest in Latin America, particularly Brazil, where mining firms are evaluating the technology. Huawei is collaborating with truck manufacturers like XCMG, mobile operators, and local partners to deliver region-specific solutions.

The goal is to eliminate the need for personnel in high-risk areas, drive the digital transformation of the mining sector, and promote safer, more efficient, and sustainable operations globally.
