(KPL) The Lao Art Museum, located in Nonsa-at Village, Saythany District, Vientiane, officially opened its doors to the public on Sunday, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s cultural preservation efforts.
The grand opening ceremony, attended by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, Deputy Prime Minister Salermxay Kommasith, Founder and President of the Lao Art Museum Phisith Sayathith, and other distinguished officials, coincided with the New Year celebrations and set the stage for the upcoming 76th anniversary of the Lao People's Army. The museum’s launch is also aligned with the "Visit Laos Year 2024" campaign, themed Safe Travel in Laos: Delightful in Culture, Nature, and History.
Founder Phisith described the museum as a culmination of the Lao government’s visionary policies, emphasizing its role as a symbol of national pride. “The Lao Art Museum is more than a gallery of artistic works. It is a profound testament to our culture, blending traditional and modern artistry to inspire unity and pride,” he said during the ceremony.
The museum features an array of traditional Lao woodcarvings, highlighting the intricate craftsmanship that is a cornerstone of the nation’s cultural identity. It also provides a platform to showcase creativity across generations, promoting sustainability and environmental awareness alongside cultural preservation.
The idea for the museum originated in 2018 with a modest art exhibition that garnered widespread appreciation. Bolstered by support from the Vientiane Capital Administration and the Lao government, the initiative grew into the Lao Art Museum, now envisioned as a hub for cultural preservation, artistic exploration, and international tourism.
Beyond serving as a repository of art, the museum is expected to create local job opportunities, support businesses, and attract global visitors. It also aims to inspire and train the next generation of Lao artists, fostering a deeper connection to cultural identity and creativity.
As the doors of the Lao Art Museum open, it stands as a beacon of Laos’ rich artistic heritage, reflecting the nation’s enduring commitment to cultural preservation and global engagement.
