(KPL) A ceremony to hand over bicycles donated by the China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD) to Lao students was held in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, on Wednesday.

In his speech, Vice President of the Lao National Assembly, Sommad Pholsena, highlighted the significance of the project, noting that the bicycles would provide Lao students with greater transportation convenience. He expressed hope that the students who received the donations would work hard in their studies and contribute to strengthening the friendship and mutual understanding between Laos and China.

Lin Yuan, Assistant Director of the International Development Department of CFRD, also spoke at the event. He mentioned that the 1,000 bicycles, delivered via the China-Laos Railway — a symbol of the friendship between the two countries — reflect the strong bond between the people of Laos and China.

One of the recipients, Athit Khounthavong, a Lao student, shared his excitement upon receiving a new bicycle. “It was very inconvenient to go to school before, as it took me half an hour to walk. Now, with the bicycle, I can get to school in just 10 minutes. Going to school has become much more convenient!” he said.

The CFRD launched the International Charity Bicycle Project in 2021 as part of its ongoing efforts to support education and improve transportation for students in rural areas.

Over a third of teachers in the Lao PDR teach multigrade classes with students from two or more grade levels learning together in the same classroom. It can be a difficult task, requiring teachers to adapt their lessons and divide their attention across different grades, while ensuring all students are engaged in the learning process and can achieve targeted learning outcomes. Multigrade classes can also be rich and rewarding learning environments as students of different ages and levels share in the learning experience based on their individual knowledge and experiences.
