(KPL) A transformative partnership between China, the Lao PDR, and UNICEF launched today aims to tackle acute malnutrition, enhance child health outcomes, and strengthen child protection services in the Lao PDR. The $1.48 million project will benefit over 221,000 children and families, especially in underserved areas.

The initiative, supported by China, includes life-saving supplies such as 6,200 cartons of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), therapeutic milk, and inpatient kits to treat severe acute malnutrition, a life-threatening condition increasing child mortality risk.

“This collaboration is crucial to achieving our health and nutrition goals,” said Vice Minister of Health, Dr. Snong Thongsana.

The project also includes training for 600 health workers, equipping 17 provincial hospitals, and providing care for 34,000 newborns. Child protection services will support 15,000 vulnerable children and equip social workers in 18 provinces with resources for gender-based violence and mental health services.

Chinese Ambassador Fang Hong highlighted the partnership as a testament to China’s Global Development Initiative, emphasizing its global leadership and humanitarian values. UNICEF’s Bilal Aurang Zeb Durrani noted the initiative’s life-saving potential, ensuring no child in the Lao PDR is left behind.

The project targets 10 provinces, including Phongsaly, Attapeu, and Champasak, aiming to build sustainable systems for long-term health and social service improvements.
