(KPL) A formal handover ceremony took place today in Vientiane at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to mark the transition of leadership from Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith, Member of the Politburo, Deputy Prime Minister, and outgoing Minister of Foreign Affairs, to Mr. Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Member of the Party Central Committee and incoming Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The event was presided over by Mr. Sonexay Siphandone, Member of the Politburo and Prime Minister, with the attendance of deputy ministers, department heads, and representatives from relevant Party and government offices.
Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith, who has been reassigned to the position of Deputy Prime Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, reflected on his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs over the past nine years. He highlighted key achievements in both bilateral and multilateral diplomacy, including Laos’ successful ASEAN Chairmanships in 2016 and 2024. These milestones significantly contributed to safeguarding national interests, promoting development, and enhancing Laos’ international standing.
In his remarks, Mr. Thongsavanh Phomvihane expressed gratitude for the substantial progress achieved under his predecessor’s leadership. He committed to further advancing the Ministry’s initiatives and ensuring Laos fulfills its diplomatic obligations effectively.
