(KPL) The Irrigation Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), held the second Stakeholder Forum for the Sub-Sector Working Group on Irrigation (SSWG-IR) in Vientiane on October 14, 2024.

The meeting was co-chaired by Deputy Director General of the Irrigation Department, Mr. Thongleang Sanganong, and Principal Natural Resources and Agriculture Specialist at ADB, Mr. Omer Zafar.

It brought together government officials, academia, and representatives of development partners, farmers’ groups, and civil society organizations.

Mr. Thongleang highlighted the importance of the forum for enhancing cooperation in the irrigation sector, which is crucial to the development of agriculture and rural areas. He emphasized that irrigation is a key driver of sustainable socio-economic development in Laos. One of the main topics of discussion was the government's priority to promote renewable energy, including solar power, for groundwater irrigation.

The forum recognized the significance of solar energy in reducing electricity costs for farmers, particularly during the dry season. The use of solar power in irrigation is one of the department’s focus programs for 2021-2025, aiming to ensure water availability and increase food production.

Mr. Zafar expressed ADB’s commitment to supporting sustainable irrigation development. He noted that the integration of solar-powered irrigation systems would enhance agricultural productivity, climate resilience, and local livelihoods.

The forum participants agreed on the need for continued investment in renewable energy, particularly solar power, to support irrigation projects.

ADB will continue providing technical assistance to the Irrigation Department through partnerships with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), fostering long-term cooperation to promote sustainable agricultural development in Laos.
