(KPL/Prensa Latina) The computerization of society and artificial intelligence are two ways for Cuba's science at present, and the University of Camagüey (UC) is focusing on them.

Over the past five years, the acquisition of knowledge about ataxia, with the use of this technology, has taken up space in the scientific community of the center, whose contributions are used by the Ministry of Public Health.

In conjunction with the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias, research with the exploitation of artificial intelligence is aimed at improving the quality of life of the elderly, as well as providing products for commercial purposes that generate foreign currency for the country.

Along with the UC, the Cuban Academy of Sciences, the ‘Rafael Estrada’ National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery are also important pillars of collaboration.

Other results with the use of artificial intelligence can be seen in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic subdural haematoma in Camagüey.

Capacity building for the mitigation of the presence of microplastics in local food chains from a health perspective also stands out with the support of this new technology.

In recent years, artificial intelligence has also used for the analysis of biomedical data, while the production of antibodies at the Center for Molecular Immunology has also benefited from the novelty of these technologies.

In addition to the design of a stimulation program for older adults with cognitive impairment and executive dysfunction, which is being developed by the UC itself, animal health is also the focus of studies.

Institutions such as the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Camagüey are also involved in the exploitation of artificial intelligence.

This has led to the scaling up of the synthesis of a vaccine against ticks, as well as the development of a drug to treat rabbit haemorrhagic disease.

The first university founded by the Cuban Revolution in 1967 plays a leading role in the inauguration of the Center for Artificial Intelligence Studies in Hebei China.

This institution was inaugurated in November 2023 and specialists from Camagüey are currently a mainstay for it, a sign of the stronghold of Cuba’s human and scientific capital.
