(KPL/VNA) The 20th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation (AMMSTI-20) opened in Siem Reap province, Cambodia on June 7 morning.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said that under the theme "Artificial Intelligence (AI) Application: Navigating the Future”, the AMMSTI-20 focuses on strategic discussions related to the integration of AI technologies in the public and private sectors across the region.

He emphasised that science and technology are important pillars supporting the progress of humanity. These fields help support progress and improve people's lives, but all must pay attention to ethical issues and personal privacy right.

Hem Vanndy, Cambodian Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, said technologies, particularly AI, have both immense potential and inherent risks.

It is important for people to have a comprehensive understanding of how to manage technology to promote inclusivity and sustainable growth, he said.

According to Hem Vanndy, AI has been introduced into human life, so integrating AI into socio-economic development is necessary. This includes implementing regulations, training, promoting engagement, and learning from both successes and failures to ensure that AI contributes positively to human’s shared future.

On June 7 evening, the AMMSTI-20 released its joint statement. Accordingly, the meeting reaffirmed the commitment to enhancing cooperation in science, technology, and innovation (STI) in ensuring the effective realisation of the ASEAN Community Blueprints 2025 and ASEAN Community Vision 2045, in the face of global and regional challenges.

The meeting noted with satisfaction the implementation progress of the 2024 Priority Economic Deliverable (PED) and Annual Priorities (APs) under the STI sector.
