(KPL) The first three months of 2024 recorded 1.3 million foreign visitors, an increase of 36% as compared to the same period last year. Yet, it is expected that the number of foreign visitors will reach 3.9 million by the end of this year.

The International Seminar on Lao Tourism Promotion was held in Oudomxay on May 29. The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Phosy Keomanivong, directors of relevant departments, business operators, Lao and international media.

The meeting provided the participants with an opportunity to promote participatory tourism, and introduce favourite tourist sites of nature, culture, history and people’s lifestyle, and tourism related services thus contributing to socio-economic development, employment, poverty reduction, and the promotion of Visit Laos Year and Laos’ chairmanship of ASEAN 2024.

“Tourism is an important economic sector that is growing rapidly and constantly. The Party and government always regard tourism as one of the most important priorities to the socio-economic development, contributing to employment, foreign currency generation, and promoting the growth of other industries,” said Deputy Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Phosy Keomanivong.

“2024 is a meaningful year as it witnesses the Lao PDR resuming its rotary chair of ASEAN and it is designated by the government as Visit Laos Year. Accordingly, the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism has joined with departments of Information, Culture and Tourism nationwide to determine 79 tourism activities including 14 activities to be organized at national level and 65 at provincial levels,” said the vice minister.

Director General of the Lao News Agency Khampheuy Philapha highlighted the necessity to promote modernization and scientific development of personnel with competence and needed skills in the media sector so that they can better serve the society.

Ms Sengkeo, Head of China Media Group (CMG) to Laos, said, “Media plays a key role in high quality development of cultural tourism. This year 2024 is the first year of the implementation of the 5-year action plan on building the Laos-China community with a shared future which was signed by senior leaders of the Parties and governments of Laos and China. It is also designated as Visit Laos Year and ASEAN-China cultural exchange year. So, I am very happy to attend this exchange event under the theme “media’s role in the high quality development of cultural tourism”. I still remember that 2019 was designated as Visit Laos-China Year and the year witnessed over 1 million Chinese people visiting the Lao PDR
