(KPL/Prensa Latina) Cuba is partaking in the meeting of the Coordinated Research Project ‘Optimization of nuclear techniques to assess micro plastic pollution in coastal areas’, which ends on Thursday in Monaco, according to Yusmila Helguera Pedraza via the Internet.

The researcher from the Center for Environmental Studies of Cienfuegos (CEAC) is participating on behalf of Cuba and her institution.

The scientific activity, which takes place at the Marine Environment Laboratories of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), aims at bringing together project partners and experts to share experiences, discuss and plan coordinated research on the assessment of micro plastic pollution in coastal sediments using nuclear techniques.

On speaking from the meeting venue, the Director of the CEAC’s Environmental Testing Laboratory explained that during the encounter, methodologies and analytical protocols were coordinated and a work plan for the project was established.

The meeting, arranged by the IAEA, is further attended by scientists from Argentina, Croatia, Kuwait, Mexico, Morocco, Ghana, Kenya, Sweden, Italy, Germany, Romania, the United States, Japan, Panama and Greece. Each year, research results from the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Marine Environmental Studies Laboratory offer hope for a better understanding of the effects of micro plastics on marine life.
