(KPL) The 5th nationwide population and housing census, to be launched in 2025, is expected to cost 22.2 million US dollars.

The government, line ministries, equivalent agencies, and local administrations across the country are in comprehensive preparation for the survey.

Minister of Planning and Investment and Vice Chairman of the National Steering Committee for the 5th nationwide population and housing census Mr Khamjane Vongphosy said that the budget is needed for preparation, data collection, and survey dissemination.

So far, although we have been able to make good organizational and technical preparations, an additional amount of 10.8 million USD is still needed.

Funds have been also raised from development partners and international organizations to fund the national survey.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT Australia) and the World Bank have pledged to support the national census.

The Chinese government has provided 8,000 pieces of equipment and some vehicles to the Lao government in support of the survey.

About 18,000 veteran field survey workers are needed. They are expected to be recruited through collaboration with provincial steering committees and authorities across the country.
