U.S Special Advisor reaffirms promoting equal rights of people with disabilities in Laos

KPL (KPL) U.S Special Advisor on International Disability Rights of State Department, Sara Minkara reaffirmed to further promote independence and functional ability of persons with disabilities through equal access to quality health and social services in the Lao PDR.

(KPL) U.S Special Advisor on International Disability Rights of State Department, Sara Minkara reaffirmed to further promote independence and functional ability of persons with disabilities through equal access to quality health and social services in the Lao PDR.

Sara Minkara visited Laos from March 20th-22nd to meet with local government officials to support the country’s chairmanship of ASEAN and discuss opportunities to further integrate disability rights across the ASEAN pillars in accordance with the ASEAN Enabling Masterplan.

ASEAN, SAIDR Minkara participated in a roundtable with Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) based in Laos to learn about the challenges and opportunities for greater disability inclusion.

She also met with a member of the Asian Development Bank to discuss the benefits of accessible tourism, as well as MAG Visitor Center to learn about the legacy of Unexploded Ordinances (OXOs) in Laos.

Since her appointment in 2021, Sara Minkara has traveled to over 25 countries, engaging with government officials, industry leaders, and civil society to support their efforts toward greater disability inclusion.

Her work emphasizes the importance of “disability diplomacy” in navigating nuanced relationships with the U.S.’s international partners, as well as raising global awareness to the economic, social, and political benefits of including persons with disabilities.
