ASEAN-Japan Tourism Ministers' Special Dialogue held

KPL (KPL) The ASEAN-Japan Tourism Ministers' Special Dialogue was held on Oct 28 in Tokyo to commemorate the 50th year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, and to discuss the “Next 50 Years with ASEAN and Japan: Designing the Path to Sustainable Tourism Together”.


(KPL) The ASEAN-Japan Tourism Ministers' Special Dialogue was held on Oct 28 in Tokyo to commemorate the 50th year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, and to discuss the “Next 50 Years with ASEAN and Japan: Designing the Path to Sustainable Tourism Together”.

The meeting was co-chaired by Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Suansavanh Viyaketh and Japanese Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Tetsuo Saito.  

Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism hosted this event in collaboration with the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism of the Lao PDR, the Chair of the Meeting for the ASEAN Tourism Ministers (M-ATM).

Held under the theme: Japan-a land of endless discovery, the meeting was attended by ASEAN tourism ministers, ASEAN Secretary General Kao Kim Hourn, and representatives of international organizations.

The participants acknowledged the immense potential of the tourism sector in the region, as well as the importance of concerted efforts by ASEAN and Japan, two of the world's most attractive and promising destinations, to advance tourism cooperation.

They noted Japan’s pursuit of sustainable tourism to create a virtuous cycle of economy, society, and environment in the local communities under the motto of “Good to Live In, Good to Visit”. ASEAN has focused on diversity, hospitality, and sustainability, with a tourism tagline of “A Destination for Every Dream”, while working on Community-Based Tourism to empower communities to achieve economic, social, and environmental sustainable development.  

The ASEAN and Japanese ministers agreed to further the development of tourism in the region through enhancing cooperation in the tourism sector, and reached a consensus on the direction for future cooperation.

As co chair of the meeting, Minister Suansavanh highly valued the close cooperation between ASEAN and Japan since 1973, noting that the cooperation has seen a constant growth over the past 50 years, contributing significantly to strengthening ASEAN Community and efforts to narrow development gap among ASEAN member states, connectivity and people to people exchange between ASEAN and Japan.

Minister Suansavanh welcomed the celebration of 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation.

She noted that ASEAN-Japan Tourism Ministers' Special Dialogue serves as a key platform for exchange of points of view and lessons on sustainable tourism and culture.

She also informed the participants that the Lao PDR will resume ASEAN chairmanship and host ASEAN Tourism Ministers Meeting and ASEAN Tourism Forum in 2024. The year is also designated as Visit Laos Year.

The Lao minister expressed Laos’ readiness to work with other ASEAN member states, ASEAN Secretariat and Japan and other ASEAN partners to ensure the successful implementation of the programmes and activities under the ASEAN-Japan tourism framework.
