(KPL) The government is making a concerted effort to strengthen agricultural production, aiming to boost crop yields and exports, so that fewer agricultural imports are required, according to Xinhua reported

Speaking at a meeting of the government and private sectors to discuss agricultural production in the Lao capital Vientiane last Friday, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone called on all businesses involved to step up agricultural production, especially by cultivating crops for which there is strong market demand.

Sonexay said measures should be introduced to protect the interests of Lao producers, so they are able to flourish and have a larger share of the agricultural market.

He said the government's policy to promote the farming of livestock and aquatic species, and the national policy on the promotion of a robust system of crop cultivation should be implemented across the country.

The processing of crops and forest products should also be a top priority, he said.

He said that most of Laos' exported goods are currently unprocessed and in raw form. More products should be processed before being sold domestically or exported, through improved coordination between the sectors involved.

Sonexay also called on agriculture-related businesses to urgently improve their weak points and build their capacity in all respects, especially by changing their business methods to adapt to the changing economic and market conditions
