China-aided lighting project handed over to Vientiane authorities

KPL (KPL) Mar 26 witnessed the handover of a lighting project funded with grant support from the Chinese government and people as a gift for their Lao counterparts on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the Lao PDR.

(KPL) Mar 26 witnessed the handover of a lighting project funded with grant support from the Chinese government and people as a gift for their Lao counterparts on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the Lao PDR.


Mr. Xonglao Yongnu, head of the project for the Lao side said that the Vientiane street lighting system upgrading project is under the framework of the Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement between Laos and China. It was launched in September 2020 and basically completed two months later. The upgraded lighting system was put into service as scheduled by the two Parties and governments.

“This project is a gift the Chinese government and people have provided to the Lao counterparts in celebrating the 45th anniversary of National Day of the Lao PDR on Dec 2 and welcoming the 9th Party Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party,” he said.

The project involved the upgrading and installation of a fountain system and closed-circuit television cameras at Patuxay Park, the installation of street lights and CCTV cameras on seven main roads of the capital city namely Lane Xang Avenue, 23 Singha Road, Nong Bon Road, Kaysone Phomvihane Road, Setthathirath-Mekong Riverside Road, Mekong Riverside Road and Chao Fa Ngum Road.

The project also involved the installation of a traffic light control system.

Vientiane Vice Mayor Atsaphangthong Siphandone expressed thanks and gratitude to the Chinese government and people for their generous assistance to Vientiane adding that such assistance has contributed to developing Vientiane as a livable and sustainable city in line with its six-word slogan of being clean, illuminative, peaceful, green, civilized and charming.

“This project constitutes a great contribution to the guidance of the city’s development in new era and represents friendship and cooperation between the two Parties and governments,” he added.     

The ceremony was also attended by Vientiane mayor Sinlavong Khoutphaythoune, Chinese Ambassador to Laos Jiang Zaidong and other high ranking officials of Laos and China.
