Laos, Japan exempt visas for official passport holders

KPL The Governments of Laos and Japan will be exempting official visas for diplomatic and official passport holders to ease people-to-people exchanges between Laos and Japan with the exemption scheduled to take effect on 1 April. The Ministry said in its announcement published in local newspapers on 17 March that Japanese nationals who hold official passports and work at embassies, consulates, or projects in Laos as well as their family members will be allowed to enter, leave, transit and reside in the Lao PDR throughout their tenure, and those with official passports issued by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be entitled to 90 days of visa exemption in the Lao PDR.

The Ministry said in its announcement published in local newspapers on 17 March that Japanese nationals who hold official passports and work at embassies, consulates, or projects in Laos as well as their family members will be allowed to enter, leave, transit and reside in the Lao PDR throughout their tenure, and those with official passports issued by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be entitled to 90 days of visa exemption in the Lao PDR.

Likewise, the announcement said, Lao nationals holding official passports and traveling to Japan to work at embassies or consulates in Japan, as well as their family members, will be allowed to enter, leave, transit and reside in Japan throughout their tenure.  Those with valid official passports issued by the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be granted 90 days of visa exemption in Japan but will need to show Japanese immigration officials invitations or documents related to the relevant project when entering Japan.

Lao nationals with official passports who visit Japan on training programmes of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) are required to apply for visas at the Japanese Embassy in Vientiane.  

In addition to the nine ASEAN member states, the Lao PDR has signed bilateral visa exemption documents with over 30 other countries worldwide.
