KPL The Government of Japan provides grant assistance of USD 40,123 for “The project for the construction of irrigation system in Mai village, Luang Namtha Province” under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP). The project will support the construction of a new irrigation system in Mai Village, Luang Namtha Province, with the aim of restoring agricultural productivity and improve the livelihoods of residents.

Mr. Koizumi Tsutomu, Ambassador of Japan to the Lao PDR, signed the grant agreement with a representative of the provincial authority, in the presence of Pol. Lt. Gen. Khamking Phouilamanivong, Secretary of the Luang Namtha Provincial Party Committee.
“In 2024, due to a typhoon, the water intake weir in Mai Village was completely destroyed, since then it is impossible to supply sufficient water to the rice fields. Consequently, in dry season, three-fourths of the rice fields had to be left fallow, causing the annual harvest to plummet.

Therefore, the Government of Japan is providing assistance to construct a new concrete water intake weir and irrigation canals, ensuring that an adequate supply of water can once again be delivered to the rice fields. I hope that this assistance will not only build physical structures, but also contribute to supporting the daily living environment of the people who reside there,” said Ambassador Koizumi.
Grant Assistance for Grassroots Security Projects (GGP) provides funds for relatively small-scale projects that directly benefit local residents by supporting economic and social development in developing countries, including the Lao PDR.
The Government of Japan has provided more than USD1.19 million to Luang Namtha Province in support of the education and irrigation sectors. As part of the commitment to addressing regional disparities in socio-economic development, Japan will continue to support initiatives that strengthen basic living standards at the grassroots level across the Lao PDR to ensure “no one is left behind.”
