(KPL) Xayaboury District has temporarily suspended the slaughter, sale and consumption of pork following confirmation of an African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak.
The district administration issued the announcement on August 21, 2026, after two samples from pigs in Ban Nam Tuan tested positive for ASF. The suspension takes effect on August 23 until further notice, covering restaurants, Lao BBQ and hotpot venues, grilled-pork stalls, frozen-food shops and other businesses handling pork products.
The outbreak was first detected in Ban Done Savanh in June and spread to five villages by July. A total of 580 pigs were affected, with 423 deaths and 157 culled, including 34 sows and five boars.
Authorities have ordered stricter controls on the movement and sale of pigs and pork products, inspections of markets and food establishments, and public awareness campaigns on disease prevention.
Violators face warnings, fines and confiscation for a first offence, double fines for a second offence and legal action in serious cases. Farmers are urged to report any abnormal symptoms in pigs immediately.
