ASEAN Science and Technology Ministers Convene in Vientiane to Advance Regional Innovation Agenda

KPL The 22nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation (AMMSTI-22) officially opened in Vientiane on June 26, bringing together ministers and senior officials from ASEAN member states to strengthen regional cooperation in science, technology and innovation.


The meeting was chaired by Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Sports Thongsalith Mangnomek and attended by ministers, deputy ministers, the ASEAN Secretary-General and delegations from across the region.
Held under the theme “Advancing the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation for a Strong, Sustainable and Competitive ASEAN,” the meeting aims to accelerate implementation of the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) 2026–2035 and support the development of a resilient and innovation-driven regional community.


In his opening remarks, Mr. Thongsalith said science, technology and innovation are essential drivers of sustainable development and regional prosperity. He noted that ASEAN has made significant progress in research collaboration, digital transformation, innovation and human resource development, demonstrating the value of regional cooperation.
Looking ahead, he outlined three strategic priorities for ASEAN. The first is strengthening regional resilience by applying science and technology to address challenges such as climate change, disaster management, food and energy security, and public health preparedness. The second is promoting sustainability through green technologies, environmental innovation and responsible natural resource management. The third is enhancing competitiveness by accelerating digital transformation, fostering innovation ecosystems and developing a skilled workforce equipped for the future economy.
The minister said continued collaboration under APASTI 2026–2035 would help position ASEAN as a stronger, more sustainable and globally competitive region while improving the well-being of its people.
