ASEAN and Japan Strengthen Partnership in Science, Technology and Innovation

KPL ASEAN member states and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in science, technology and innovation (STI) during the 15th Meeting of the ASEAN-Japan Joint Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation (AJCCST-15), held in Vientiane on June 24, 2026.

The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Souksavat Sihapanya, Director General of the Department of Science Management under Laos’ Ministry of Education and Sports and ASEAN Senior Official on Science, Technology and Innovation (COSTI), and Mr. Okada Shinsuke, Director of the International Cooperation Division at Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Senior ASEAN COSTI officials and Japanese representatives also participated.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Souksavat described Japan as one of ASEAN’s most trusted and longstanding partners in science and technology, highlighting the achievements of bilateral cooperation in research, human resource development, technology transfer and innovation.
He thanked Japan for its continued support in advancing ASEAN’s science and technology agenda and expressed confidence that the discussions would help identify new opportunities and strengthen future collaboration for the benefit of the region.
Participants reaffirmed the importance of ASEAN–Japan cooperation in supporting the ASEAN Plan of Action on Science, Technology and Innovation (APASTI) 2026–2035 and advancing the shared goal of building a strong, sustainable and competitive ASEAN through innovation and scientific development.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to expanding practical cooperation and fostering partnerships that promote research, technological advancement and sustainable economic growth across the region.
