Laos, India Move to Deepen Cooperation and Explore Comprehensive Partnership

KPL Laos and India have agreed to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and explore upgrading relations to a Comprehensive Partnership following the 10th Meeting of the Laos-India Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation held in New Delhi on June 3.

The meeting was co-chaired by Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane and Indian External Affairs Minister, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar during Thongsavanh's official visit to India from June 1-3.

The two sides reviewed progress in cooperation across a range of sectors, including trade and investment, public health, tourism, digital connectivity, human resource development, culture and defense. They also reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in regional and international forums, including ASEAN-India cooperation, Mekong-Ganga Cooperation and the United Nations.

Officials noted that bilateral relations have continued to strengthen through regular high-level exchanges, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Laos for the ASEAN-India Summit in 2024.

As part of the visit, the two foreign ministers signed the minutes of the Joint Commission meeting and witnessed the exchange of three cooperation agreements covering cultural exchanges, public health cooperation on drug management, and educational cooperation at Kaysone Phomvihane College.
The two sides also unveiled a commemorative logo marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Laos and India, established on February 2, 1956.
During the visit, Thongsavanh attended the 2nd Laos-India Business Meet, met business leaders and other officials, and participated in activities celebrating seven decades of Laos-India friendship.
