Seven Killed in 28 Traffic Accidents During New Year Celebrations

KPL A total of 28 traffic accidents were reported in Vientiane during the three-day International New Year celebrations, resulting in seven deaths, according to traffic police authorities.

The Head of the Traffic Police Department of Vientiane Capital, Mr. Phath Sangkhom Phommalath, revealed the figures during an interview on the Safe Driving program aired on Lao National Radio. He said the accidents occurred during the year-end period from late 2025 through the start of 2026.

The accidents caused varying levels of damage to vehicles, with 12 vehicles sustaining minor damage, 41 suffering moderate damage, and one vehicle severely damaged. In addition to the fatalities, seven people were slightly injured and three others sustained serious injuries.

Traffic police records show that the fatal incidents occurred on three separate days. On December 29, 2025, three people were killed when a motorcycle carrying three passengers collided with the rear of a truck parked along the roadside in Nakhouay Tai Village, Xaysettha District. All three victims died at the scene.

On December 30, 2025, two people lost their lives after a van struck the rear of an electric motorcycle on a road in Xiengkhuan Village, Hatsayfong District. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two additional fatalities were reported on January 1, 2026. In one case, a motorcyclist was killed after colliding with a cow on a road in Phonkham Village, while the animal sustained serious injuries. In a separate incident on the same day, another motorcyclist died after crashing into an electricity pole on a road in Donkoi Village.

Traffic police have reiterated their call for all road users to exercise caution, strictly observe traffic regulations, and drive responsibly particularly during holiday periods reduce accidents and save lives.
