(KPL) The central province of Xaysomboun has been designated a red zone after the detection of African swine fever (ASF) cases, with the disease confirmed in Vanghai village, Thathom district, on February 19.

In response to the outbreak, local authorities have prohibited the processing and sale of infected pork to curb the spread of the disease. ASF poses a significant threat to pig farming and the livelihoods of many Lao citizens, prompting calls for increased surveillance and collaborative efforts to contain and eliminate the outbreak. Inspections and sample collection will be carried out, and farmers have been advised to strengthen biosecurity measures and adhere to movement restrictions.

Although ASF does not pose a risk to humans, it is highly fatal to pigs and wild boars, with nearly 100% mortality. The virus can persist for up to three years in frozen meat and one year in dried meat, requiring high temperatures for eradication.
