Xayabuly Holds the 18th Annual Elephant Festival

KPL The 18th Xayabuly Provincial Elephant Festival officially opened on February 22, 2025, in Xayabuly Province, featuring 50 elephants in a grand celebration of Laos’ rich cultural heritage. The event was attended by Mr. Bounthong Chitmany, Vice President of Laos, along with his spouse. Other distinguished attendees included Mr. Phongsavanh Sitthavong, Governor of Xayabuly Province, also accompanied by his spouse, along with high-ranking party-state leaders, provincial officials, domestic and international guests, and local residents.

(KPL)  The 18th Xayabuly Provincial Elephant Festival officially opened on February 22, 2025, in Xayabuly Province, featuring 50 elephants in a grand celebration of Laos’ rich cultural heritage. The event was attended by Mr. Bounthong Chitmany, Vice President of Laos, along with his spouse. Other distinguished attendees included Mr. Phongsavanh Sitthavong, Governor of Xayabuly Province, also accompanied by his spouse, along with high-ranking party-state leaders, provincial officials, domestic and international guests, and local residents.

The festival's opening ceremony showcased a vibrant lineup of cultural performances, beginning with traditional dances from eight ethnic groups, an Elephant Festival dance, a celebratory performance featuring 1,800 students, and a procession of various cultural and tourism banners. The event also featured an elaborate elephant parade, highlighting different aspects of Lao traditions and elephant conservation efforts.

Among the highlights were National Flag Procession, and processions representing the province’s elderly, its eight ethnic tribes, and 11 districts. Spectators also enjoyed unique performances by elephants, including synchronized movements, balancing acts, dancing to drumbeats, playing soccer and basketball, and even painting. Other attractions included elephants carrying people, rolling large objects, and engaging in traditional Lao boxing demonstrations.

Throughout the festival, visitors can enjoy daily elephant performances, elephant riding services, local markets displaying traditional handicrafts, and artistic performances by students. Concerts, visits to the Phukaen Elephant Conservation Center, and sightseeing tours within Xayabuly’s key tourist destinations further enrich the festival experience.

The Xayabuly Elephant Festival remains a significant event in promoting elephant conservation, cultural heritage, and eco-tourism in Laos.
