The governments of Laos and Japan have signed a revised agreement for the Wattay International Airport Improvement Project, with Japan providing grant assistance worth 3.863 billion yen, or approximately US$26.5 million, to support the airport's ongoing upgrade.
The revised Exchange of Notes was signed on 5 August 2026 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vientiane between the Government of the Lao PDR and the Government of Japan.
The updated agreement builds on the arrangement reached in 2024 by increasing the grant amount by 1.027 billion yen. The additional funding will help meet higher construction and procurement costs arising from inflation and other factors, ensuring the project continues without interruption and is completed according to plan.
During the signing ceremony, the Lao government expressed its appreciation to the Government and people of Japan for their continued support for infrastructure development in Laos, particularly in the aviation sector.
The Lao side also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with Japan to ensure the successful implementation of the airport improvement project while further strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
