Laos Marks Over Six Decades of Progress in the Health Sector

KPL The Ministry of Health has held a ceremony to commemorate the 61st anniversary of Lao Medical Day on June 18, highlighting more than six decades of development and achievements in the country’s health sector.


The event was attended by Minister of Health Baykham Khattiya, senior officials, public health administrators, former leaders, doctors, nurses, and health workers, according to the Center of Information and Education for Health.

During the ceremony, Minister Baykham expressed appreciation to medical professionals and health workers for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting public health and saving lives among communities across the country. She also praised health workers as “white-shirt warriors” for their commitment during both challenging periods and times of peace.

She emphasized that Lao Medical Day is a significant occasion that reflects the progress, achievements, and continued development of the nation’s healthcare system over the past 60 years.

The ceremony also included discussions on key public health challenges, including noncommunicable diseases and thalassemia, which continue to affect public health and future human resource development. These issues are also considered priorities by the World Health Organization and international partners.

In addition, an exhibition was organized to showcase achievements and innovations from both public and private healthcare sectors, demonstrating the ongoing advancement of healthcare services in Laos.
