Prime Minister Meets ADB President to Mark 60 Years of Partnership

KPL Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone has welcomed President of the Asian Development Bankthe (ADB), Mr. Masato Kanda during a visit marking six decades of cooperation between the country and the regional lender.


PM Sonexay Siphandone received Mr. Masato Kanda at the Prime Minister’s Office in Vientiane on 26 March. The visit forms part of celebrations for the 60th anniversary of the Laos–ADB partnership, held from 25 to 27 March.

Officials said the meeting highlighted the long-standing cooperation between the two sides, with the Lao leader noting that it was Mr Kanda’s first official visit to the country since taking office in early 2025.

During the talks, the Prime Minister expressed appreciation for what he described as the bank’s “invaluable assistance” over the past 60 years. ADB’s support has spanned key sectors including public finance, education, healthcare and infrastructure development. Projects in agriculture, transport and energy have also contributed to economic growth, alongside initiatives aimed at reducing poverty and improving living standards.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the Laos–ADB Country Partnership Strategy for 2024–2028, which aligns with the government’s national development agenda. The framework focuses on strengthening public finances, expanding access to essential services, and addressing climate and environmental challenges.

Mr Kanda thanked the Lao government for its hospitality and reiterated the bank’s commitment to supporting the country’s development goals. Both parties agreed to further deepen cooperation, with a focus on ensuring long-term economic stability and social progress.
