(KPL) Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Moscow, Russia on Thursday for a high-level bilateral meeting that concluded with the signing of multiple cooperation agreements across sectors.

President Putin underscored the economic momentum between the two nations, citing a 65 per cent increase in trade turnover last year and a further 20 per cent rise in the current year. He noted that work is underway to expand logistics routes through Vietnam and China to support growing cargo flows and deepen ties in the energy and mining sectors.

The official ceremony took place in a formal setting as both leaders entered the hall accompanied by their respective delegations. Senior officials from both sides exchanged a series of documents, reflecting the expanding scope of strategic cooperation between Russia and the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

“There are good prospects for increased cooperation in peaceful nuclear energy, which can provide Laos with affordable and clean energy,” Putin said, also highlighting Russian involvement in the exploration of metal and bauxite deposits in Laos.

President Sisoulith, emphasized the importance of deepening political and defense ties. He said, both sides agreed to strengthen political relations built on mutual respect and cooperation, including military-technical assistance and joint training exercises.

Sisoulith also expressed appreciation for Russia’s ongoing humanitarian support, particularly in helping Laos clear unexploded ordnance left over from past conflicts—an effort he described as vital to the country’s development and public safety.

The event concluded with the two leaders reaffirming their shared commitment to advancing cooperation in both traditional and emerging sectors, positioning the Laos - Russia relationship as a growing force in regional and international affairs.
