(KPL) Chinese Ambassador to Laos, Ms. Fang Hong, sat down for an exclusive interview with Lao media in Vientiane to mark the upcoming 64th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the Lao PDR.
The formal establishment of these ties, which dates back to April 25, 1961, has paved the way for a deep and enduring partnership between the two nations.
In her interview, Ambassador Fang emphasized the historical significance of the China-Laos relationship, describing the two countries as "special comrades and brothers."
She reflected on the shared struggles in the past, particularly in their joint efforts against American imperialist aggression, and highlighted the continued cooperation in promoting socio-economic development.
"The history of our diplomatic ties is one of great beauty," she said, "This relationship has become a model for development between political parties and between nations."
The Ambassador went on to discuss how the relationship has evolved, especially under the leadership of General Secretary Xi Jinping. "After General Secretary Xi Jinping proposed the concept of building a shared future for mankind, China and Laos have become politically unified in jointly building a community with a shared future between the two sides," she explained.
This shared vision was further solidified in 2019 and 2023 when Xi Jinping signed action plans with Laos' top leadership, outlining the path toward a comprehensive strategic partnership and a community with a shared future for the two nations.
Practical cooperation between China and Laos, according to the Ambassador, has resulted in continuous and remarkable achievements. "China has become the largest investor and one of the most important trading partners of Laos for many consecutive years," she noted. More than 80% of Laos' agricultural products are exported to China, and the bilateral trade volume between the two countries reached an impressive USD 8.23 billion in 2024, marking a 15.9% increase from previous year. "This sets a new record for our trade relations," said Ambassador Fang.
A centrepiece of this cooperation is the Laos-China Railway, which has significantly transformed Laos from a landlocked country into a land-linked one. "The railway connects Laos with Thailand, Singapore, and 18 other countries and regions," she explained. With more than 50 million passenger and freight trips recorded, the Laos-China Railway has earned its reputation as a "golden route" for international logistics, known for its high efficiency and convenience.
In addition to the railway, the Ambassador highlighted other key areas of cooperation, such as infrastructure projects along the Laos-China expressway, including Vientiane and Vang Vieng. This partnership extends to electricity, energy, and mining, where several projects like the Luang Prabang Hospital, Mahosot Hospital, and the Lao Railway Vocational Technical College are already making a tangible impact on the lives of the people in both countries. These initiatives, she stated, "play an important role in further strengthening China-Laos friendship and bringing greater happiness to the peoples of both countries."
As the bilateral relationship enters its 65th year, Ambassador Fang expressed her unwavering confidence in the future of China-Laos ties. "Despite the passage of time, our friendship continues to thrive with vitality," she said. "We must work together, collaborate, and hold firm to our shared vision. Without a doubt, this will lead to an even brighter future for both China and Laos. I firmly believe this with all my heart."
Ambassador Fang's words reflect the strong bond between China and Laos and a shared commitment to future cooperation, as both countries continue to build upon their successful partnership.
