(KPL) Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone held a telephone conversation with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to strengthen the friendship and cooperation between Laos and Japan.

The discussion focused on further consolidating the Lao-Japanese strategic partnership, which has been steadily growing.

During the remote meeting, both sides expressed their satisfaction with the opportunity to consult and exchange views on enhancing bilateral cooperation.

Both leaders highlighted the value of the nearly 70-year-long relations and the deepening ties between the two nations.

They agreed to collaborate on organizing activities to commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 10th anniversary of the strategic partnership in 2025.

Additionally, the two sides discussed ways to elevate their relationship to new heights, promoting cooperation in various fields such as economy, trade, investment, and tourism. They also explored the possibility of launching direct charter flights to enhance people-to-people exchanges, particularly in light of Visit Laos Year 2024, which would also create more opportunities for Japanese businesses and investors.

The Lao side expressed readiness to host Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and a high-level delegation for an official visit to Laos in October 2024, coinciding with the ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Vientiane.

They also pledged support for Japan’s proposal to host the 2nd Summit of the Asia Zero Emission Community alongside the ASEAN Summit in October 2024.

Japan views Laos as having significant potential in renewable and clean energy production, which could attract more foreign investment.

In response, Japan extended an invitation for Prime Minister Sonexay to visit Japan in early 2025 to mark the beginning of the 70th anniversary celebrations of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The conversation took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere, reflecting the deep and enduring ties between Laos and Japan, which continue to grow as strategic partners.
