(KPL/Prensa Latina) The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) announced on Thursday details of a project to update veterinary services associated with small livestock in Cuba.

The initiative involves the Cuba’s Agriculture Ministro (MINAGRI), FAO and the European Union (EU), which aims at revitalizing technical assistance work to improve productivity and animal health for the sustainability and growth of the sector.

According to FAO, progress has been made in terms of national capacities for the clinical and gestational diagnosis of small livestock, through the provision of surgical and obstetric equipment, mobile ultrasound and X-rays, surgical instruments and artificial insemination kits, among other means.

Antibiotic and anti-parasitic medicines for veterinary use were further purchased to combat high-impact diseases in small livestock, the source added.

Six municipalities in the central provinces of Villa Clara and Sancti Spiritus serve as the setting for launching the project, which is also valued very positively by directors and experts in both territories, in the expectation of surging the sheep and goat population and preventing health risks.

In general, the plan helps to extend good practices in animal management, reproduction and feeding, through a specific training programme, FAO granted.
