KPL Russia and Laos have completed eight rounds of joint humanitarian demining since 2018, clearing more than 228 hectares of land, destroying 4,367 explosive devices and training 213 Lao People’s Army sappers, according to the Russian ambassador to Laos.

In an article reflecting on the mission, Ambassador Sergei Zhestkii said the cooperation aimed to help Laos address the continuing threat posed by unexploded ordnance (UXO), a legacy of the bombing campaign during 1964–1973.

The joint mission began in 2018, when specialists from Russia’s International Mine Action Center began working with Lao personnel to clear contaminated areas and provide training in detecting and disposing of explosive devices.

Operations have covered several provinces, including Bolikhamxay, Xiengkhouang, Khammouane, Vientiane and Huaphan. The eighth round, completed in spring 2026, cleared a further 20.1 hectares and destroyed 461 explosive items.

Beyond clearance operations, Russian instructors have trained Lao military personnel in technical procedures, provided equipment and protective gear, and helped raise public awareness about the dangers of UXO.

Ambassador Zhestkii said the cooperation had contributed to safer communities, agricultural land and infrastructure, while strengthening ties between the two countries. Russia and Laos plan to continue the humanitarian demining mission in 2026–2027.
