The opening ceremony will be held on the same day and co-chaired by Mr. Thongloun Sisoulith, President of the Lao PDR, with his spouse, and His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn of Thailand, with Her Majesty the Queen. More than 500 guests, including prime ministers, ministers, and senior officials from relevant sectors of both countries, are expected to attend.

The bridge is a joint project of the governments of Laos and Thailand, aimed at meeting the needs of both nations, particularly residents of Borikhamxay and Bueng Kan provinces, who have long sought improved connectivity across the Mekong River.

Once operational, the bridge is expected to facilitate cross-border travel, strengthen connectivity and integration between the two countries and the wider East–West Economic Corridor, and enhance transportation, trade, and tourism. It will provide smoother, faster, and more efficient movement of people and goods, delivering tangible benefits to the peoples of Laos and Thailand.

The opening of the 5th Lao–Thai Friendship Bridge will symbolize the enduring friendship and close cooperation between Laos and Thailand, as well as their strategic partnership for sustainable growth and development. The event will also form part of the celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries in December 2025.
