Ms. Manivong is a midwife working in Sanamxay District, Attapeu Province. In her community, she saw how pregnancy could bring fear, especially during emergencies, when access to care became uncertain.
For Manivong, the greatest pride of her work was simple: seeing a mother survive childbirth and hold a healthy baby in her arms.
Her commitment was tested when a catastrophic dam collapse destroyed the local health center. With the facility gone, clean delivery kits provided by UNFPA became a lifeline, helping her support safe deliveries even in the field.
She continued reaching women where they were. She travelled to remote villages to provide antenatal checkups, postnatal follow-up, family planning information, and emotional support to pregnant women facing fear and uncertainty.
At the time, many health facilities were staffed mainly by general nurses, with limited specialized midwifery services. Manivong believed every health facility should have at least one trained midwife, so that women could receive skilled, respectful care close to home.
Even after disaster, her work helped women give birth with dignity, safety, and hope.
