On 23 July 2026, Mrs Vithaya Xayavong formally presented her credentials to Dr Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Republic of the Maldives, at the President's Office in Malé.
She assumes her role as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Lao People's Democratic Republic to the Republic of the Maldives, with her embassy based in New Delhi, India.
During the meeting, President Muizzu extended a warm welcome to Mrs Xayavong, expressing confidence that her professional background and expertise will ensure success in her prestigious diplomatic assignment.
He also conveyed his warm regards to President Thongloun Sisoulith of the Lao PDR, alongside the government and people of Laos.
Reflecting on bilateral ties, the President commended the 14-year friendship between Laos and the Maldives, highlighting their mutual support across bilateral and multilateral frameworks, including the United Nations.
In response, Ambassador Xayavong expressed her sincere gratitude to the President and conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from President Thongloun Sisoulith, the Lao government, and the Lao people to President Muizzu and Maldivian people.
She thanked the Maldivian government for its enduring friendship and cooperation on regional and international stages, pledging to further expand and deepen bilateral relations during her tenure.
The Lao PDR and the Republic of the Maldives established diplomatic relations on 10 February 2012.
