(KPL) On April 7 — Officials and development partners met this week to advance a nationwide campaign aimed at preventing and eliminating child labor in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

The consultation, organized by the Department of Labor Management under the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, brought together government agencies, international organizations and private sector representatives to finalize communication tools and align strategy.

The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Khamphet Onlasi, deputy director general of the department, and Mr. Viengprasith Thipphasouda, national coordinator for the International Labour Organization in Laos.

Participants included representatives from the Lao Federation of Trade Unions, the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Embassy of Canada, along with other stakeholders.

Officials said the meeting focused on reviewing progress in developing public awareness materials, ensuring coordination across sectors and aligning messaging with national laws and international standards.

Laos has ratified key international agreements, including ILO Convention No. 138 and ILO Convention No. 182, which set minimum age requirements and prohibit the worst forms of child labor.

Planned campaign materials include posters, brochures, educational videos and short radio advertisements designed to reach communities nationwide.

Organizers said the meeting achieved broad agreement on the communication tools, marking a step forward in launching a coordinated national campaign to combat child labor and promote fair labor practices
