(KPL) Laos moved forward with plans to strengthen regional connectivity on March 31, 2026, with the signing of a concession agreement for a railway linking Thakhek in Khammouane Province to the Mu Ya border crossing with Vietnam.

The signing ceremony was held at the Landmark Hotel Vientiane and attended by Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith, along with ministers, deputy ministers, former senior party and state leaders, provincial officials, and business representatives.

The project covers the design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of the railway and is considered a key component of Laos’ strategy to enhance regional connectivity under the 2026–2030 National Socio-Economic Development Plan.

Officials said the railway is a priority cooperation project between Laos and Vietnam. It aligns with the East-West Economic Corridor and supports the country’s long-term goal of transforming from landlocked to land-linked.

The concession agreement was signed by Phonvanh Outhavong on behalf of the government and Chanthone Sitthixay representing the developer.

The project is expected to improve cross-border transport links, facilitate trade and logistics, and contribute to economic growth in central Laos and surrounding regions.
