A high-level ceremony was held on 16 March 2026 at the International Cooperation and Training Centre (ICTC) in Vientiane to formalise the leadership transition for Vientiane, the capital of the Lao PDR.
The event marked the handover of duties between the outgoing Mayor and the newly appointed Chairman of the Vientiane Administration Committee, alongside the appointment of a new Deputy Secretary of the Vientiane Party Committee.The ceremony was presided over by Mr Khamphanh Phommathat, Member of the Party Central Committee Politburo, and Minister of Justice. The event was attended by senior officials of the Vientiane Party Committee, the Vientiane People’s Council, and represnetatives of relevant authorities.During the proceedings, Mr Atsaphangthong Siphandone, Member of the Party Central Committee and outgoing Mayor of Vientiane, presented a comprehensive report on his administration's leadership over the past five years. He highlighted the significant achievements made across various sectors while candidly addressing the remaining challenges and outlining priority areas for Vientiane’s future development.New Appointments ConfirmedA representative of the Party Central Committee’s Organisation Committee read out Prime Ministerial Decree No. 52/PM, dated 10 March 2026 which officially appoints Mr Sililatthongsing Thongpheng, formerly the Vice Mayor of Vientiane, as the Chairman of the Vientiane Administration Committee, and Thavixay Maoxomphou as the Deputy Secretary of the Vientiane Party Committee.Strategic Directives for the FutureAddressing the assembly, Mr Khamphanh Phommathat commended the Vientiane Party Committee and leadership for their successes during the previous term. He delivered a strategic directive urging the new leadership to foster internal solidarity and maintain high levels of political consensus within the administration, focus on robust infrastructure development to ensure Vientiane remains a peaceful, safe, and liveable city, and combat misconduct among Party members and staff, while modernising administrative processes to ensure they are streamlined, transparent, and efficient.
