Lao PDR Extends Deep Condolences to Thailand Following Tragic Train Accident

KPL On January 16, 2026, Mr. Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, sent a message of condolences to Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, regarding the recent accident involving a special express passenger train at the Thai–Chinese High-Speed Railway construction site in Nakhon Ratchasima Province.

(KPL) On January 16, 2026, Mr. Thongsavanh Phomvihane, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, sent a message of condolences to Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, regarding the recent accident involving a special express passenger train at the Thai–Chinese High-Speed Railway construction site in Nakhon Ratchasima Province.

The message stated:

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the accident involving the special express passenger train travelling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani, which occurred at the Thai–Chinese High-Speed Railway construction site on the morning of January 14, 2026, in Nakhon Ratchasima Province. The tragic incident resulted in a significant number of fatalities and injuries.

On behalf of the staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and on my own behalf, I would like to express my deepest condolences to Your Excellency and, through you, to the Government and the people of the Kingdom of Thailand, in particular the families of the victims and all those affected by this tragic event.

I am confident that, under the close attention of the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and with the solidarity of the Thai people, the difficulties arising from this accident will be overcome and resolved swiftly.”
