(KPL) Laos and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan have officially established diplomatic relations, marking a new milestone in the expansion of Laos’s foreign relations.

The signing ceremony took place on January 7 at the Permanent Mission of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the United Nations in New York City, United States. A Joint Communiqué formalizing diplomatic ties between the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan was signed on the occasion.

The Lao government was represented by Thongphane Savanphet, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Lao PDR to the United Nations, while the Jordanian government was represented by Walid Khalid Obeidat, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations. Diplomats from both sides witnessed the ceremony.

Jordan, which gained independence in 1946, is located in Western Asia with its capital in Amman. The country follows a constitutional monarchy system and has a population of more than 11 million. Jordan is classified as an upper-middle-income economy, with key exports including clothing, fertilizers, potash, phosphates, vegetables, and pharmaceuticals.

At the ceremony, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest and to supporting each other within international and multilateral frameworks.

Jordan has been a member of the United Nations since 1950 and has played an active role in the international community, including serving multiple terms on major UN bodies such as the Security Council, ECOSOC, and the Human Rights Council.

With the establishment of diplomatic relations with Jordan, the total number of countries maintaining diplomatic ties with the Lao PDR has increased to 152. This development is in line with Laos’s foreign policy of peace, independence, friendship, and cooperation, and contributes to strengthening its international presence as it continues to participate in key international mechanisms, including the UNICEF Executive Board and the Bureau of Landlocked Developing Countries.
